AI CODE DETECTOR GUIDE

Can an AI code detector tell if ChatGPT or Copilot was used?

No. Is My Code AI does not identify a particular AI product or establish who wrote code. It reports which published code-style rules matched the code you supplied.

In Is My Code AI, analysis stays in your browser.

What the report actually identifies

Is My Code AI runs a transparent heuristic. Its report shows a score, the rules that matched, and the lines involved in each match. The score is the sum of configured rule weights, capped at the tool's maximum display value.

That result describes the presence of the configured patterns in the submitted code. It is not a claim that a particular system generated the code, and it is not an authorship decision.

A named tool in a comment is still not attribution

One published rule checks for an explicit AI-tool attribution in a comment. If submitted code literally contains a comment that names an AI tool, the report can show that the comment matched this rule.

That is a finding about visible text in the code. It does not verify that the comment is accurate, determine which product generated the implementation, or prove who authored the surrounding lines.

Why style cannot name a source

Other rules look for code-style signals such as boilerplate explanatory comments, long documentation-style comments, highly descriptive multi-word identifiers, repeated adjacent comments, and template-style defensive error text. These patterns can also come from a team convention, a starter template, a formatter, a generator, or ordinary developer choices.

Because multiple explanations can produce the same pattern, a matched rule is a review prompt rather than evidence of one specific tool or author.

How to investigate a real question

If you need to understand how a change was made, inspect the code in context and use evidence outside the heuristic: commit history, pull-request discussion, issue context, repository conventions, and a technical walkthrough. These sources can address questions that a code-style report cannot settle.

Use flagged lines to focus the review, then explain any conclusion with the relevant technical context rather than with the score alone.

Review code locally

Is My Code AI runs in the current browser. You can paste code, choose supported source files, or select a local folder; submitted code is not uploaded by this static site. The language picker supports Python, JavaScript, Java, C++, PHP, and C#.
